Digital Functional Skills

RATIONALE

The delivery of Digital Functional Skills (DFS) forms a critical component in equipping learners with essential digital literacy needed to thrive in a modern, technology-driven society. As digital technology increasingly permeates all aspects of life—education, employment, communication, and access to services—ensuring that individuals possess the fundamental digital skills has become both a societal and economic imperative.

INTENT

The intent of delivering Digital Functional Skills is to provide learners with the essential digital competencies needed to participate fully in modern life, work, and learning. The curriculum is designed to bridge the digital divide by supporting those with limited or no digital experience and enabling them to develop confidence and independence in using everyday technology. Our goal is to offer an inclusive, relevant, and accessible digital learning pathway that enhances employability, supports personal development, and prepares learners for further study or progression into the workplace.

IMPLEMENTATION

Digital Functional Skills are delivered through a structured programme consisting of three 50-minute lessons per week, providing consistent and manageable exposure to digital learning. The curriculum is offered at both Entry Level and Level 1 to ensure learners are taught at an appropriate level according to their prior knowledge and starting points. Initial diagnostics are used to place learners at the correct level and identify individual learning needs. Lessons combine tutor-led instruction with practical, scenario-based activities that reflect everyday digital tasks. The delivery model allows learners to build confidence gradually while developing real-world digital problem-solving skills. Ongoing formative assessment and feedback ensure that learners make steady progress, with additional support embedded to address gaps in knowledge or digital confidence.

IMPACT

The impact of Digital Functional Skills is evidenced through increased learner confidence, digital competence, and the ability to navigate everyday digital tasks independently. Learners successfully apply their skills in practical contexts, including managing online accounts, accessing public services, and communicating securely. Completion of the qualification enhances employability, supports progression into further education or training, and contributes to digital inclusion in the wider community.
